Day 1: Arrival at Sonmarg(9,186 feet)

Transportation can be arranged from Srinagar which is around 2 hours from Sonmarg(Base camp of KGL treks). Reach Sonmarg and overnight stay in Sonmarg. Pickup cost is Rs 500/ person extra(one side).

 

Day 2: Trek from Sonamarg to Nichnai (11,482 feet ) (10 kms)

The trek starts 3 km out of Sonamarg, on the Srinagar road. Exactly at the 3 km mark, you will spot a lone Dhaba on the right. The place sells packaged water, biscuits and other edibles and is your last place to pick up short eatry. For the initial 3 kms the trail is uphill, next 2 kms is a descent and finally there is an gradual ascent of 5 kms upto Nichnai. On the trail you will see beautiful meadows, dark forests with trees of Maple, Pine and Bhoj . Reach Nichnai campsite by late afternoon. Total trekking distance is Rs 10 Kms.

 

Day 3: Trek from Nichnai to Vishansar Lake (12,139 feet ) via Nichnai Pass (13,615 ft) (11 kms)

Trek from Nichnai to Vishansar Lake is long but a scenic one. Starting early in the morning; around 08:00AM, start the trek towards the Nichnai Pass and enjoy the stunning views of the lush valleys and the untouched beauty of the region. Hereafter, cross the river and continue hiking through the banks of the river and arrive at the Nichnai Pass or the Vishansar Berry. Once you cross the Nichnai pass towards Vishansar Lake you have reached your destination for the day. Camp here for the night.

 

Day 4: Explore Vishansar and Kishansar (12,467 ft) (2 kms)

Today is the exploration and acclimatization day. You can explore Vishansar and Kishansar lake. The Vishnusar lake lies 0.5 km to the left and 100 feet above the camp site. Head left and follow the stream without crossing it.

 

Day 5: Trek from Vishansar Lake to Gadsar Lake (11,811 ft) via Gadsar Pass (13,697 ft) (10 kms)

After breakfast, we will start our trek passing by Kishansar Lake towards Gadsar Pass and to reach there it takes around 2 to 3 hours and once you reach Gadsar pass, you will have the full view of Kishansar and Vishansar lake. You will Gadsar lake by late afternnon. Gadsar lake is the prettiest lake of KGL tre.Overnight stay in camps near Gadsar lake.

 

Day 6: Trek from Gadsar Lake to Satsar Lake (11,482 ft ) (12 Kms)

After breakfast, head towards Satsar lake. Total distance is 12 kms. First 1.5 kms will be steep ascent followed by lever walk. Reach Satsar lake by late afternoon. Satsar is a group of seven interconnected lakes situated in a narrow alpine valley. Camp at beautiful campsite at near Satsar lake.

 

Day 7: Trek from Satsar Lake to Gangabal Lake (11,482 ft) (13 Kms)

Today’s trek will pass through rocky terrains full of boulders. The view of Gangabal and Nandkol twin lakes from the top is something to look forward. Last few kms are through Meadows. Camp at Gangabal lake.

 

Day 8: Trek from Gangabal to Naranag(7,450 ft)(11 Kms)

Today is the final day of the trek and most of the trek is descent. Start trekking towards the tree line alongside the stream and then through Pine forest and grassy land. Finally, will reach Naranag. Board the jeep from Naranag to Srinagar. Dropping cost is Rs 500/ person extra(one side).

As we gain higher altitude, the air becomes thinner. To overcome this we need to develop our aerobic fitness. The more fitter you are, you will enjoy more during the trek. Kashmir Great Lakes is a moderate trek, so proper fitness is required for this trek is recommended.

 

Difficulty Level- MODERATE

 

1: For cardiovascular endurance, begin jogging atleast 1 month before the trek.

2: For strength do squats, push ups.

 

Fitness Bechmark: Jog/Run for 5 Kms in 30 mins.

Remember always start your training program with stretching and warm up exercises.

Basic necessities:

 

  • Good quality trekking shoes(preferably high ankle).
  • Rucksack(40-60 litres).
  • Rain cover.
  • 2 water bottles.
  • Torch with spare batteries.
  • A trekking pole.
  • Glucose, Chocolates, biscuits and nuts
  • Original ID card.
  • Personal medical kit(if required).
  • UV Protection Sunglasses.

 

Clothes:

  • Poncho, Rain Coat
  • 2 Pairs of Quick Dry Tees and Track Pants
  • 3 Pair of Socks
  • 2 pairs of woolen socks
  • 2 Full Sleeve Fleece Jacket
  • 1 Wind proof jacket
  • Gloves
  • Sun cap, one scarf,one baracalava.
  • Light towel

How to reach?

Srinagar
Srinagar is the base location for our Kashmir Great Lakes trek. Our meeting point is Srinagar TRC. We will pick you up at 2:00 PM in the Afternoon and start the drive to Sonmarg. The entire drive from Srinagar to Sonmarg takes around 2-3 hrs.

Closest airport is Srinagar International Airport which is well connected via flights from Delhi.
