Overview Of Stok Kangri Trek

Stok Kangri lies in the beautiful area of Ladakh. Stok Kangri summit is above 20,080ft and is recommended for experienced trekkers. Situated in Hemis national park, the Stok Kangri is the highest peak in the Stok range of Ladakh. Day1: Arrival at Leh

Arrive at Leh and check into the homestay and take complete rest for acclimatization. Overnight stay in homestay at Leh,

 

Day 2: Acclimitization day at Leh(11,480ft).

Leh is situated at an altitude of 11,480 ft. The entire day is for you to relax and acclimatize to the high altitude of Leh. Today, you can get familiar with the town and enjoy the cultural and natural beauty of Leh. Today, you can explore Leh local market and monasteries situated near the Leh town. Overnight stay in homestay at Leh. 

 

Day 3: Drive from Leh to Stok Village and Trek from Stok village to Chang Ma (13,080 ft, 4 Hrs).

Today is the actual start of the trek. The drive to the Stok Village is quite adventurous and has bounties of nature never before experienced. Full of lush green, silver birch trees and colourful flowers, there is no better ride. The weather is perfect during summers and roaming around is very peaceful. Stok Village is situated to the south of Leh and is well known for its royal palace and the King of Ladakh who resides here. After reaching Stok village, we trek to Chang Ma. It is a fairly easy trek crossing the Stok village and the hydro powered Buddhist prayer wheel. Overnight stay in camps.

 

Day 4: Trek from Chang Ma to Mankorma(14,200ft).

Today is a easy trek and we will cross various water streams. This day will show you the real beauty of ladhak and gives you the answer why ladhak is known as cold desert.If you are lucky, you can also see blue sheep “Bharal” which come down to drink water from these streams. Overnight stay in camps and you will enjoy camping at Mankorma.

 

Day 5: Trek from Mankorma to Base camp(16,300ft).

Stok kangri base camp is situated at 16,300ft height and it takes around 5 hours to reach the campsite. Base camp has many water bodies around it, and when the sun rays fall on it, they sparkle like diamonds. Stok Kangri Base camp is surrounded by numerous peaks few of them are Gulap Kangri, Parcha Kangri etc. Overnight stay in camps at Stok kangri base camp. The air becomes thin as you climb and proper acclimitisation is required for climbing the summit of Stok kangri. Overnight stay in camps..

 

Day 6: Rest and Training day.

Today is essentially a day to train for the upcoming trek and know the possibilities and challenges that are involved in climbing the summit. Our Trek Leader will let you know about the different situations which might occur and how to deal with them. A basic training will be given to you on the usage of equipment such as Ice Axe, Crampons, Rope,techniques like ascending & descending in snow, Self arrest. We will start the summit push at midnight.

 

Day 7: Trek from Base camp to summit(20,080ft) and back to base camp.

We will start the summit push at midnight. Today is the challenging day and the route goes through glaciers and then comes to the steep slope to the summit ridge. At the start of the slope wear your crampons and start the climb. For an average trekker it will take around 9 hours to reach the summit. Today’s climb is the test of your physical as well as mental strength. From summit, you would get a view of the Karakoram range. The summit is a marvelous place surrounded by magnificent Himalayan peaks on all side. All the pressure, training, exhaustion, fatigue will be worthy, the effort will be worthy. After spending 1 hour at summit, we will head back to base camp. We will start the summit push at midnight. Fitness required for Stok Kangri trek

GET YOURSELF FIT

As we gain higher altitude, the air becomes thinner. To overcome this we need to develop our aerobic fitness. The more fitter you are, you will enjoy more during the trek. Stok Kangri Trek is a challenging trek suitable for trekkers with prior experience in high altitude treks is recommended.

 

Difficulty Level- Challenging.

1: For cardiovascular endurance, begin jogging atleast 2 month before the trek.

2: For strength do squats, push ups.

Fitness Bechmark: Jog/Run for 5 Kms in 30 mins. Remember always start your training program with stretching and warm up exercises.

Basic necessities:

  • Good quality trekking shoes(preferably high ankle).
  • Rucksack(40-60 litres).
  • Rain cover.
  • 2 water bottles.
  • Torch with spare batteries.
  • A trekking pole.
  • Glucose, Chocolates, biscuits and nuts
  • Original ID card.
  • Personal medical kit(if required).
  • UV Protection Sunglasses.

How to reach?

Ladakh in summer is a great tourist destination for adventure junkies and leisure  travelers. This is the best time to go to Ladakh when the weather is pleasant. During summers the main Manali – Leh Highway and the Leh -Srinagar highway is open.

 

Reaching Leh by Flights
Leh Airport is situated in Leh. All flights to Leh in the Summer are in the morning.

 


Reaching Leh by Road
There are two ways Leh can be reached by road.

 

 

1) Manali-Leh Highway
This is a picturesque highway which connects Himachal and Ladakh with some of the worlds highest passes. It takes 2 days to reach Leh from Manali with a break in Jispa or Sarchu.


2) Srinagar-Leh Highway
This is a better road then the Manali -Leh highway. This journey can be easily completed in a day but you can also stop over at Kargil for the night and continue to Leh the next day.
